Amazon replaced its Fire tablets with three Alexa tablets that run full Android with Google Play, so Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube and the other apps on your phone install on them. The top model, the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, pairs a 12-inch 2.8K screen at 120 Hz with a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 chip, and Amazon sells a pen and a keyboard for it. It costs $499.99. All three tablets release October 14.

Amazon also redesigned the Kindle line. The Kindle, Paperwhite and Colorsoft are all thinner and lighter, the Paperwhite runs up to 12 weeks on a charge, and new aluminum Signature Editions add 32 GB and a light sensor. The basic Kindle ships now, and the Paperwhite and Colorsoft follow on October 28. Ring added four 4K cameras and a pan-tilt indoor camera, and the new Fire TV Stick 4K moves to Amazon's own Vega OS.

Amazon sells every linked product below itself, at its list price. Most are preorders with no customer reviews yet, so the picks lean on the listings, Amazon's announcements and early hands-on reports.

  • 3:2 screen, taller than the 16:10 shape most Android tablets use
  • Amazon rates it at up to 16 hours of video
  • The Pro Pen ($89.99) charges magnetically, and the Pro Keyboard ($149.99) runs off the tablet's power, with no battery of its own
– The trade-offs
  • The anti-glare Nanomatte screen costs $50 more
  • 16 GB of RAM comes only with 256 GB and Nanomatte, at $679.99
  • The listing doesn't say how many years of Android updates it gets
  • No customer reviews yet

Buy this if you want a big Android tablet for work and reading and you'd use a pen or a keyboard. Engadget and 9to5Google report the chip as MediaTek's Dimensity 8400, a 4 nm eight-core part. The base model has 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, a 13 MP rear camera and an 8 MP front camera, in an aluminum body.

The Nanomatte version etches an anti-glare texture into the glass to cut reflections. It costs $549.99 with 8 GB and 128 GB, or $679.99 with 16 GB and 256 GB. The pen and keyboard fit only the 12 Pro, and a bundle with both costs $649.99, which saves $89.98 over buying them separately.

  • Releases October 28

Buy this if you read every day. Of the three Kindles, it pairs the 7-inch screen and waterproofing with the longest battery life, for $199.99. Amazon's listing calls it thinner and lighter than the last Paperwhite, with fast page turns and a high-contrast display.

The Signature Edition at $249.99 adds an aluminum back, 32 GB, a light sensor that adjusts brightness for you and double-tap page turns, with no ads. 16 GB holds thousands of ebooks, so pay for the Signature for the light sensor and the aluminum back.

The Signature Edition at $319.99 adds an aluminum back, 32 GB, an auto-adjusting front light and double-tap page turns. Color comics take more space than novels, so the extra storage matters more here than on the Paperwhite.

Ring Smart Lock ($249, early 2027)

Ring's first smart lock opens by fingerprint, backlit keypad, the Ring app or Alexa. If the battery dies, a few turns of a built-in dial restore enough power to unlock the door. Ring plans US sales in early 2027 in black, silver and brass, and the lock was still awaiting FCC authorization at the announcement, so there is nothing to order yet.

The buying guide.

01

Alexa tablets run full Android

Fire tablets ran Fire OS, a version of Android that installed apps only from Amazon's Appstore, so Google's apps were missing. The Alexa tablets ship with the Google Play store, which means Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Google Docs and the apps on your Android phone install as they would anywhere else. Amazon keeps its own apps built in, and a Kindle reading mode silences notifications.

Fortune reports that Amazon will phase out Fire tablets and keep sending them security updates for four years. If you own one, it keeps working, and you have no reason to replace it this month.

02

Which Kindle to buy

The basic Kindle ($169.99 without ads) has a 6-inch screen and up to 6 weeks of battery, and it is the lightest and smallest. The Paperwhite ($199.99) has a 7-inch screen, warm light, waterproofing and up to 12 weeks per charge. The Colorsoft ($289.99) adds color, at up to 8 weeks per charge.

Each Signature Edition adds an aluminum back, 32 GB and an auto-adjusting light. Pick the Paperwhite unless you read comics, then pick the Colorsoft. The Kindle Click remote works with any Kindle from 2024 on, so you can add it to an older model too.

03

The new Fire TV Stick 4K runs Vega OS

Earlier Fire TV sticks ran Fire OS, which is based on Android and let you install apps from outside Amazon's store. The 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K runs Vega OS, Amazon's own system, and installs apps only from the Fire TV Appstore. The big streaming apps are there. Apps you installed from other sources won't run.

If you depend on those, buy the Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which BGR reports is the only stick in the range still running Fire OS.

04

Ring's 4K cameras and the subscription

Ring lists live view and motion alerts as standard on the new cameras. Rewatching recorded clips and Ring's smart alerts need a Ring Protect plan, sold separately. Ring's own listings also note that 4K video quality depends on your internet bandwidth and the camera's temperature, so check your upload speed before paying for 4K over 2K.

FAQ.

October 14, 2026, in the US, Canada and Mexico, and from October 19 in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. All three sizes and the Kids Tablet 11 are on preorder at Amazon now.

Yes. The Alexa Tablet 8, 11 and 12 Pro all ship with Google Play, and the Kids Tablet 11 lets parents add apps from it. Fire tablets were limited to Amazon's Appstore.

Amazon is phasing them out. Fortune reports that existing Fire tablets will keep getting security updates for four years.

The basic 16 GB Kindle is in stock now. The Paperwhite, Paperwhite Signature Edition, Colorsoft, Colorsoft Signature Edition and the Kindle Click remote release October 28, 2026.

No. The 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K runs Vega OS and installs apps only from Amazon's Fire TV Appstore. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max still runs Android-based Fire OS and allows apps from other sources.

Ring lists live view and motion alerts as standard features. Rewatching recorded video and Ring's smart alerts need a Ring Protect subscription.

Ring plans US sales in early 2027 at $249. It was still awaiting FCC authorization when Ring announced it in October 2026.

The Verdict

The 12 Pro for work,
the Paperwhite for books.

Preorder the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro if you want Google Play apps on a 2.8K screen with a pen and keyboard, for $499.99. For streaming and reading, the Alexa Tablet 11 at $329.99 gives up the faster screen and keeps 8 GB of RAM. Readers should preorder the Paperwhite, or the Colorsoft for comics. Ring's Outdoor Cam 4K Plus is the camera to start with, and the Fire TV Stick 4K suits anyone who never installs apps from outside Amazon's store.
