The GPU market in August 2026 is worse than it was in May, and for a different reason. Tariffs were the spring story: 10 to 30 % on Chinese-assembled cards, painful but at least stable. Then the memory shortage arrived. DDR5 contract prices have run four to five times their 2025 level, GDDR7 followed, and a graphics card is mostly memory by cost. The DDR5 RAM crisis now sets the price of your graphics card too.

The market split along vendor lines. AMD's RDNA 4 cards held their May prices almost exactly: the RX 9070 XT we listed at $700-800 in May sells for $770 today. NVIDIA's did not. The RTX 5080 we listed at $1,100-1,300 now starts at $1,400. The RTX 5090 has roughly doubled, to $4,480 for the cheapest card in stock anywhere.

Five price points below, at street prices verified against live listings. One of them is a tier we are telling you to skip.

We recommended the Sparkle Titan OC here in May at $250. That card now sells for $370, so the pick moves to ASRock's Challenger at $310 for the same GPU. The Sparkle card gained $120 in three months without changing at all, which is how the budget tier has behaved all year. The reasoning behind the pick has not moved. The B580 carries 12 GB of GDDR6 against 8 GB on the RTX 4060 and RX 7600, and in titles that hit VRAM ceilings (Indiana Jones, Stalker 2, Hogwarts Legacy) that capacity is the difference between playable and a slideshow. The RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB is the stronger card and now costs $779, which puts it above our sweet-spot pick and out of this tier entirely. For 1080p and light 1440p, the B580 is what we would buy.

In May this card was not on the list. It is here now because the market moved around it: at $570 it is the only card between $350 and $770 we would recommend without caveats about the price. Against the RTX 5070, which now sells for $829, the GRE matches raster performance for $260 less. Against our own sweet-spot pick, the trade is plain: the 9070 XT is about 25 % faster and carries 16 GB, for $200 more. If your budget stops before $700, this is where it should stop. The May version of this entry argued that the 9070 XT matched the RTX 5070 Ti in raster for $80 to $150 less. The performance claim still holds: TechPowerUp and Hardware Unboxed both put the two within a couple of percent in raster at 1440p, with the 5070 Ti ahead by 10 to 15 % in ray-tracing-heavy titles. The price claim needs updating, because the gap widened rather than closed. The cheapest in-stock 5070 Ti today is $1,094. The 9070 XT is $770. That is a $324 gap for a card that trades blows with it. NVIDIA's advantages here are real (DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, the CUDA stack, resale value) but none of them are worth 42 % more money. For 1440p and entry-level 4K, this is the card.

The 5080 is the last NVIDIA tier where the price still tracks the product. It went up, but it went up by 20 to 35 % while the 5090 doubled. For 4K gaming under $2,000 it has no real competition: the 9070 XT and 5070 Ti both fall short of consistent 4K-high-with-RT framerates, and the 5080 clears that bar with DLSS 4 Quality active. Multi Frame Generation is the reason to pay NVIDIA money at this tier rather than buying two AMD cards' worth of value one rung down. The 16 GB of VRAM remains the long-term worry, and it is a bigger worry now that the memory shortage makes a mid-life upgrade expensive. If you are buying a 4K card to keep past 2028, understand you are buying 16 GB for the duration. Cheaper 5080s exist at $1,400 (PNY's Epic-X) if you want to save the last hundred.

In May we called this the splurge tier and meant it as a recommendation. We are not recommending it now. Nothing about the card changed. Its price went from roughly $2,400 to $4,480 because 32 GB of GDDR7 is the single most shortage-exposed bill of materials in consumer electronics right now, and NVIDIA has no reason to discount a product that sells out to datacenter-adjacent buyers regardless.

If you game, buy the 5080 and put the $3,000 difference anywhere else. If you run local AI inference and the machine pays for itself, the 5090 is still the only 32 GB single-chassis option under professional-card pricing, and you should go in knowing you are paying roughly double what this card cost three months ago. Everyone else should wait. GDDR7 contract pricing is expected to ease through 2027 as new fab capacity lands, and this is the tier that will fall furthest when it does.

Buy now or wait

This answer inverted since May. In the spring we said buy now, because tariffs were not going to fall and nothing better was coming. Now the recommendation splits by tier. Under $800, buy: AMD's RDNA 4 cards held their prices through the shortage and there is no reason to expect them cheaper before 2027. Above $1,400, wait if you can. NVIDIA's high end is carrying the full weight of GDDR7 scarcity, and that is the part of the market most likely to correct when new memory capacity lands through 2027. If your card still works and you were eyeing a 5090, this is the worst quarter in two years to buy one.

The 9070 costs more than the 9070 XT

Check this before you buy either. The non-XT Radeon RX 9070 currently sells for $999 while the faster 9070 XT sells for $770, an inversion caused by thin stock on the cheaper SKU rather than by anything about the cards. It has held for weeks. If you search by model name and sort by price you can easily end up paying $230 more for 25 % less card. Buy the XT unless the gap closes.

NVIDIA vs AMD vs Intel

The 2026 answer is more lopsided than it was. NVIDIA still owns DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation, the CUDA ecosystem, and resale value. But the price gap that used to be $80 to $150 per tier is now $250 to $3,000, because GDDR7 took the shortage harder than GDDR6. For gaming under $400, Intel. For gaming from $500 to $900, AMD. For 4K plus DLSS 4, NVIDIA at the 5080 tier. For AI and ML work that needs 32 GB, NVIDIA by default, at a price you should think hard about.

VRAM rules of thumb

The floor is 12 GB. Below that, modern texture-streamed engines run out at 1440p settings. 16 GB is comfortable for 1440p and entry 4K, and it is what we would target for a card meant to last past 2028. At 4K with texture mods or for content creation you want 24 GB. 32 GB is the local-AI threshold for 30B-parameter models at usable quality. One shortage-specific note: buy the VRAM you need up front. Replacing a card mid-cycle is more expensive in this market than it has been in years.

PSU and case clearance

Each tier needs a PSU bump. The 5090 is 575 W TBP and wants a 1,000 W supply with native 12V-2x6 cabling; do not use the included adapter. The 5080 is 360 W and pairs with 850 W. The 9070 XT at 304 W is fine on 750 W, the GRE at 220 W on 650 W, and the B580 at 190 W runs off any modern 550 W unit. For clearance, most current cards are 320 to 360 mm long. Mid-tower ATX is fine; compact ITX needs the 2.5-slot or short-PCB versions.

The used market

Used is a stronger lane than it was in May, for the same reason new is worse. RTX 4070 Super and 4080 Super, RX 7900 XT and XTX, and RX 7800 XT all deliver the gaming performance they did in 2024, and the shortage has pushed used prices up far less than new ones. Inspect 12VHPWR connectors on any 4080 or 4090 before buying. For pre-12VHPWR cards, which is everything AMD and NVIDIA 30-series and below, used is where the value is right now.

FAQ.

Memory. DDR5 contract prices have run four to five times their 2025 level and GDDR7 followed, and memory is a large share of what a graphics card costs to build. Tariffs added 10 to 30 % in the spring and are still in the baseline, but they are no longer the moving part. The clearest evidence is the split: AMD's GDDR6 cards held their prices almost exactly while NVIDIA's GDDR7 cards rose 20 to 80 %.

For gaming, no. It delivers about 45 % more frames than an RTX 5080 for roughly three times the money, and that calculation was already poor at $2,400. For local AI inference it is still the only consumer card with 32 GB, which is the threshold for 30B-parameter models at usable quality, so if the machine earns money the math can work. For everyone else this is the tier to wait out.

In raster they are within a couple of percent of each other. In ray tracing the 5070 Ti wins by 10 to 15 %. In price the 9070 XT is $324 cheaper as of August 2026, up from an $80 to $150 gap in May. The feature argument for NVIDIA has not changed; the price argument against it has gotten much harder to ignore.

At $570 for the RX 9070 GRE, yes, for 1440p. Twelve gigabytes is the floor rather than the comfortable number, and it will show first in 4K and in heavily modded games. If you can reach $770 for the 9070 XT's 16 GB, that is the better card to keep for four years, and mid-cycle upgrades are expensive while the shortage lasts.

Probably, and not soon. Memory makers are adding capacity through 2027, and GDDR7 is where the tightest constraint sits, so NVIDIA's high end has the furthest to fall. AMD's RDNA 4 cards have less room to move because they never spiked. No current forecast shows relief before mid-2027.

Almost certainly. It is 575 W TBP with transient spikes above 700 W. A 1,000 W unit is the minimum and 1,200 W gives headroom for a 9800X3D alongside it. Use a native 12V-2x6 cable from your PSU manufacturer rather than the included adapter.

August 2026 is a worse market than May and an easier one to shop. The memory shortage hit GDDR7 hardest, so it hit NVIDIA hardest. AMD now wins every tier below $1,400 on price alone. For most builders the answer is the RX 9070 XT at $770, or the GRE at $570 if the budget stops sooner. For 4K with DLSS 4, the RTX 5080. For the top of the lineup, our recommendation is to skip it: the 5090 is the same card it was in May at nearly double the money, and it is the tier most likely to correct. Skip any 8 GB card at any price.
