DDR5 kits are assembled from a small number of DRAM dies, and SK Hynix A-die is the one enthusiasts look for because it clocks and tightens further than the alternatives. Why DDR5-6000 and not faster

AM5 links the Infinity Fabric clock to the memory clock, and on Zen 5 that 1:1 relationship holds to roughly DDR5-6000, with some chips managing 6400. Past that the board drops to a 2:1 divider, and the latency penalty from the divider outweighs the bandwidth the faster kit delivers. A DDR5-8000 kit will boot on a 9800X3D and score worse in games than a $430 DDR5-6000 CL30 kit. Buy 6000, spend the difference elsewhere.

Two sticks, never four

Use two DIMMs. AM5's memory controller handles a pair of dual-rank sticks well and struggles with four, to the point that most boards drop to DDR5-5200 or DDR5-5600 for stability once all four slots are populated. That costs the 1:1 fabric ratio. If you want 64 GB, buy a 2×32 kit rather than adding a second 2×16 pair to what you have.

EXPO or XMP

EXPO is AMD's profile standard and XMP is Intel's. Most XMP kits train fine on AM5, but EXPO is the version the board vendor validated, and it is what appears on motherboard QVL lists. If you are building now, you have no choice and the KLEVV at $430 is the least painful way through it. If your current machine works, wait. DDR5 contract prices sit four to five times above their 2025 level, memory makers are adding capacity through 2027, and no current forecast shows relief before the middle of that year. Memory is the single worst component to buy in this market, and unlike a GPU it is trivial to add later.

What about used memory

Memory is one of the safer used purchases. DRAM has no moving parts and no meaningful wear mechanism, and a kit either passes MemTest86 or it does not. Buy a matched pair from one seller rather than two singles, run MemTest86 for a full pass before the return window closes, and expect to pay perhaps 25 % under retail rather than the 50 % that used GPUs fetch, because the shortage lifted used memory prices too.
