At Connect 2026, Meta showed a VR headset shrunk to the size of a pair of glasses. Meta VR Glasses weigh about 100 grams, which Meta says makes them five times lighter than a Quest 3. The glasses carry the displays and sensors. A puck on an optical tether holds the processor, battery and storage, and clips to a pocket or a bag. Open sides and a passthrough camera let you see the room around you while you watch.
Meta pitches four uses: a personal cinema with 3D films and IMAX Enhanced content, courtside seats at more than 100 live sports events a year, a private workspace with several virtual screens, and a game console with 75 games at launch that you play with your hands. The display is a 5K micro-OLED panel at 37 pixels per degree, which Meta says keeps text sharp enough to work in.
You cannot buy them yet. Meta VR Glasses go on sale in spring 2027 for $1,299.99, and Meta has not published a field of view, a weight for the puck, or which of today's Quest apps will run on them. Until then, a Quest 3 does the VR half for $599, and display glasses from XREAL, VITURE and RayNeo give you the private big screen in a frame you can wear like sunglasses, from $270.

Meta VR Glasses (spring 2027, $1,299.99)
Meta VR Glasses split the hardware in two. The glasses hold the 5K micro-OLED displays, pancake lenses Meta built for this device, and Dolby Atmos speakers in the frames. The puck holds Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, the battery and the storage, and connects over an optical tether. Meta rates the puck for up to three hours of high-resolution media playback, with 45W fast charging. You control it with your voice, your eyes and hand gestures, with Meta AI built into the operating system and no controllers required. Meta calls it the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device, lists Prime Video, YouTube, Disney+, Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ among its media partners, and promises more than 75 games at launch plus Xbox Cloud Gaming. For work, it projects several virtual screens and turns a flat surface into a keyboard and touchpad. Hologram calling shows a photorealistic version of you on WhatsApp or Zoom calls. Meta has not published the field of view or the puck's weight.

Buy this if you want VR now and plan to use it for games as much as movies. The Quest 3 runs everything on Meta's store, and Meta says its ESPN Immersive Sports broadcasts start on Quest with college football this year, before the VR Glasses exist. The listing credits Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 with twice the graphics performance of the Quest 2, and 8 GB of RAM.
The cost is weight: Meta says the VR Glasses weigh a fifth as much. For games and shorter sessions it is the best VR you can buy from Meta today.

The savings come from the display, 1832 x 1920 per eye behind Fresnel lenses against the Quest 3's 2064 x 2208 behind pancake lenses, and from storage.
For movies, the Quest 3 is the better screen. For games and fitness apps, the 3S runs the same library for $250 less.

Buy this if the part of Meta's pitch you want is the private movie or work screen in something you can wear on a plane. The One Pro plugs into your phone, laptop or handheld over USB-C and shows its screen as a large virtual display. XREAL's X1 chip keeps that screen anchored as you turn your head, with 3ms latency per XREAL, and the optional XREAL Eye camera adds 6DoF so the screen stays fixed in the room.
It does not run VR apps, so it cannot replace a Quest for games built for VR. XREAL's 3D mode converts regular video and games to 3D.

Buy this for the workspace half of Meta's pitch. VITURE's SpaceWalker app splits a Mac or PC into up to three virtual screens, horizontal or vertical, which is close to what Meta promises for the VR Glasses at $800 less. VITURE says the 1200p panels are sharper than its previous VITURE Pro.
Like the XREAL, it is a screen for another device, and it cannot run VR games. VITURE sells it in two sizes for different pupil distances, so check the size chart before you order.

Why Meta moved the computer to a puck
A standalone headset carries its processor, battery and storage on your face, and that is most of the weight. Meta's VR Glasses put all three in a puck on an optical tether and leave the glasses with the displays, lenses and sensors, which is how Meta gets to about 100 grams. You pay for it with a cable from your glasses to your pocket, and battery life set by the puck: up to three hours of media playback, per Meta, with 45W charging.
Display glasses are screens for another device
XREAL, VITURE and RayNeo make display glasses. They plug into a phone, laptop, Steam Deck or ROG Ally over USB-C and show that device's screen as a large virtual display. They do not run apps or VR games on their own. The XREAL and VITURE track your head in 3DoF, so the screen stays in front of you as you look around but does not stay anchored to the room as you move. A Quest, or Meta's VR Glasses, runs its own apps, tracks your position in the room, and shows your surroundings through color passthrough cameras.
Should you wait for Meta VR Glasses?
Spring 2027 is at least six months away, and $1,299.99 buys a Quest 3 and an XREAL One Pro with money left over. Meta has not published the field of view, the puck's weight, or whether current Quest games and apps will run on the VR Glasses. It has said more than 75 games will be ready at launch, and that you can stream more through Xbox Cloud Gaming. If you want VR or a private screen for flights in the next six months, buy one of the picks above. If light weight is the reason you have avoided VR, wait for reviews in 2027.
What the content deals mean for you now
Some of what Meta announced reaches Quest owners first. Meta says ESPN's Immersive Sports broadcasts, in 8K with 180-degree views, start on Quest with college football this year. Disney+ begins streaming 3D films such as Marvel's The Avengers and Black Panther in select countries in November, per Meta. Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ are opening their 3D catalogs for the first time. On display glasses, you get whatever the phone or laptop you plug in can play.
